Moped & Dog—2001

The Story Behind the Photograph...

Helen, Jordan and I spent a week in Rome back in 2005 (Helen was 7 months pregnant with Tamar). At one point, we were looking for an interesting vantage point for the Vatican and needed to cross a street. The light turned green in our favor, only this woman on a scooter had come to a stop directly in front of us.  I was struck by her sense of fashion in combination with her dog which was, for all intents and purposes, completely at home on her scooter. The trick, if you can call it that, was to remember to kneel down, to change my perspective. As soon as I did that, I was thrilled. In one frame, I was able to capture her dog, the ubiquitous Roman scooter and this woman’s sense of fashion. As with some of my other images, her face was more than unimportant, I believed it to be a distraction. The picture was not about this particular person, but about an attitude and a way of life. And so for me the image is refined and restricted to its most important elements. Not everyone will agree with this choice, but it is a choice I have made from time to time and have always been pleased with. This shot in particular always brings a smile to my face.
