Kalisher Joins Walk Carrboro Effort
“Carrboro is a remarkable town,” Jesse says of the small North Carolina town where he and Helen located their gallery last year. “We have world class coffee, chocolate, comedy, pottery, organic and local food and so much more.” The gallery is part of the new Walk Carrboro campaign which includes a colorful walking map and advertising on North Carolina Public Radio. “If you’re in the neighborhood, come visit us and see all that Carrboro has to offer.”

Carrboro
May 8th – June 11th
Carrboro”, a collection of Jesse Kalisher’s black and white photographs of the famously eclectic and left-wing town of Carrboro, North Carolina where the Gallery makes its home. Jesse and Helen moved to neighboring Chapel Hill, NC from San Francisco at the end of 2003. “When we moved the gallery into Carrboro, I knew I had to photograph here,” Kalisher said. “There is so much to capture, I suspect taking pictures in Carrboro will be a lifetime project.”

The New Images

Burma
Jesse traveled to Burma in 1998. He traveled the country for a month. "The people were wondeful," Jesse says of his time there. "And the food was amazing." He and Helen enjoyed digging through the archives to devlier these images, nearly all of which have never been seen before now.

Houston
Jesse and Helen visited Houston in April. It was the rainiest April on record and two days after the Kalishers left Houston experienced torrential rain and catastrophic flooding. “While we were fortunate to hit a window of clear skies,” Jesse said, “my heart also goes out to the folks in Houston who were affected by the flooding after we left.” Jesse was able to photograph a wide range of subjects in Houston and in an expansive planned community north of the city called The Woodlands. “I look forward to heading back one day and photographing Galveston and the oil industry, but as it was, it was a terrific trip.” The highlight, Jesse says, was undoubtedly the Beer Can house.
