A Tour of the JLG Designer Showhouse

When we saw that the Junior League of Greensboro’s Designer Showhouse was open for tours, we knew we had to go visit!

This historic 1940’s home situated in a neighborhood full of gorgeous old trees and stately architecture got a glow-up when 19 design firms went all in on the re-design of each space throughout the house. From the rooms that traditionally get the most attention – living rooms, bedrooms, and entrances – to surprising nooks and small spaces that tend to get less time in the limelight, every inch of this historic showhouse was thoughtfully designed. This event, hosted by the Junior League of Greensboro, supports the mission of JLG to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve the community.

Upon entering the home, guests are greeted with a flock of cranes swirling around a curved staircase. Deep blue and green colors in the wallpaper are balanced by white cranes, the busy patterns grounded by simple furniture and warm grey wainscoting. We love the balance of whimsy and elegance – in this house, more is more.

The downstairs powder room was another pocket of floor-to-ceiling color. Hand-painted wallpaper with a playful pattern paired perfectly with warm art pieces and a plush woven rug. In the office, swaths of glossy blue flanked by patterned curtains make the perfect nook for a pair of framed landscape paintings. In a monochromatic room, accents of bright art and textures like metallic frames or carved wood balance the otherwise overwhelming walls.

Unexpected art moments in spaces that might normally be ignored in the design of a living space get the royal treatment in this house. This reading nook (at left) was formerly a closet, but now hosts the perfect snug space for some quiet time with a book. In the laundry room across the hall (at right), dimensional art creates interest in a small room that most don’t consider “worthy” of art! We love the thoughtful treatment of these transitional spaces.

Breakfast nook design by Dweel by Cheryl Interios, living room design by Allen & James

Look up! In several rooms throughout the home, we saw decorated ceilings with bright, eye-catching art. In the breakfast nook, an incredible shade of yellow is the perfect backdrop for brassy wall art, complemented by a metallic copper and burned velvet floral pattern wallcovering above. In the living room, punchy art commands the room. The space is full of energy, the rhythmic patterned ceiling wallcovering recalling a room full of guests buzzing with conversation.

The entire house was a treat to tour. We left inspired by the play of art and interior design. It seemed each art piece was in dialogue with the room it inhabited. And while this was a showcase of residential interior design and decor, we’re thrilled to see more hospitality and multifamily designers taking on these trends to create unique, memorable, personal spaces. Thanks to the Junior League of Greensboro for hosting this event, and all participating designers that we had the pleasure of speaking with on the tour.
